I nästa decennium kommer socialt engagemang vara av stort värde

Jag tänkte fortsätta på temat om en webbsidas värde och framgång som inte är så lätt att få grepp om med alla siffror hit och dit. I det här inlägget presenterar jag användbara verktyg för att jämföra statistik, konkurrensbevakning och värden. Det handlar mycket om hur man tolkar statistik, tjänar pengar och får människor att engagera. I det här inlägget sätter jag fokus på webbsajter med socialt engagemang.

Värdet
Värdet är en subjektiv tolkning men jag syftar på hur värdefull sidan är utifrån ett kommersiellt intresse, dvs hur attraktiv sidan är för annonsörer. En annonsör har olika mål, och när webbsidan lätt kan uppfylla dessa mål så ökar värdet på sidan för annonsören. Målen handlar oftast om resultat, som t.ex. hur många som köper en produkt, läser ett budskap eller associerar något med ett varumärke.

Räckvidd i CPM minskar i betydelse
I gammelmedia är räckvidd den allra viktigaste värdet i kombination med målgrupp eller geografi. Den typen av medietolkning har man försökt föra över på internet och 2000-talets sajter har präglats mycket av det. Standarden har varit att sälja på CPM (cost per mille, dvs kostnaden för tusen exponeringar). Det bästa resultatet (klick på annonsen) får man på frekvens 1 av besöket, antalet klick minskar sedan drastigt med antalet exponeringar som följer i besöket. Man brukar därför inte exponera en annons mer än 5 gånger per besök (frekvens 5) då det kostar för mycket (när man betalar per CPM). Därför har det blivit en rusning till sajter som kan visa på flest unika besökare per sidvisningar eftersom annonsören vet att man statistiskt då får mer klick.

KIA-listan har därför spelat en väldigt bra roll i Sverige som har fokus på just denna kommersiella faktor. Men som alltid är det lätt att manipulera siffror och även sin notering på just den listan. Som sajtägare vill man välja de tjänster och siffror som ser bäst ut (se How to lie with statistics, en bok som än idag trycks pga dess populära ämne), och därför så gör man allt för att ge en bättre bild av hur det egentligen ser ut. Exempel på det är att slå ihop flera sajters tjänster i samma domän, släppa in google på innehåll om droger, sex och spel ger också en boost på KIA då det är trafikdrivande ämnen men enklast är att samarbeta med andra sidor som samtrafikerar innehåll där man länkar till innehåll mellan varandra så att man liksom bjuder på unika besökare. Alla dessa metoder är oseriösa, men ändock sysslar de flesta med denna teknik för att öka värdet på sina sidor.

Det finns många andra metoder att påverka siffrorna i KIA på ett oseriöst sätt och det har nu annonsörerna börjat lära sig och förstå. Man börjar intressera sig av djupare relevanta siffror och engagemang istället. I USA har flera tjänster blivit tillgängliga som ställer den traditionella CPM modellen på hyllan. Det är framförallt tjänster såsom Compete, Quantcast och comScore som öppet jämför målgrupper, engagemang och geografi på sajter.

Med Alexa kan man numera internationellt (även många sajter i Sverige) jämföra engagemang, vilken målgrupp och geografi av besökare mellan olika sajter. Eftersom många använder Google Analytics som en tjänst att mäta sin trafik på sin sajt så blir även målgruppsdata mer öppen och tillgänglig för andra att granska och utnyttja. I Google Ad Planner som baserar innehållet på de som mäter trafik med Google Analytics kan man som annonsör få fram helt andra underlag än vad sajtägarna själva försöker sälja.

Socialt engagemang på uppgång
Trenden är stark att engagemang ökar i värde hos annonsörer. I de nya sociala sajterna finns det betydligt större möjligheter att både utföra speciella kampanjer som engagerar människor, men också att få snabbare genomslag och resultat. Innehållssidor och allmänmedia sjunker drastiskt i annonsvärde eftersom det inte finns någon social faktor. Jag menar att den sociala faktorn med lätthet konkurrerar ut det gamla traditionella tidningstänket med räckvidd. Jag kan själv bevittna otroliga kampanjer på den tiden familjeliv.se hade ett stort socialt engagemang, de sociala kampanjerna som skulle finnas någon vecka fick vi avbryta efter bara några timmar. När jag drev Bröllopstorget och skapade engagemang där så hände det lite då och då att annonsörerna ringde till oss bad oss plocka bort annonserna eftersom de inte hann med och leverera eller svara på alla samtal osv. Annonsörerna bevittnade kraften i en social kampanj, det kunde rent av explodera av engagemang och intresse.

En social kampanj handlar visserligen också om räckvidd, men den är inte central utan det viktigaste är att uppnå mål. Sociala kampanjer tenderar även att sprida sig bland andra sociala webbplatser, det blir liksom en inkörsport till viral spridning. Tänk dig själv, en kampanj som engagerar socialt har en stor potential att spridas vidare av mottagaren i dess egna nätverk av sajter och vänner. Effekten kan bli enorm. Därför är inte längre antal unika besökare eller räckvidd för en social webbplats lika viktig för annonsören i framtiden eftersom den virala spridningen kan mångfaldiga räckvidden nästan oändligt.

2009 tror jag är det sista året som den gamla CPM modellen fortfarande är dominerande, i nästa decennium 2010 och framåt kommer det sociala engagemanget dominera i värdet för annonsören. Det finns två trender idag som bevisar det, den ena är tidningsdöden som är en effekt av att annonsörerna vänder sig till andra aktörer, och den andra är den sociala utvecklingen på nätet som tagit rejäl fart de senaste två åren. Nästa stora grej är Google Wave som tar den traditionella email-dialogen till att bli social och vi får något som jag tidigare berättat om en global dialog.

Vad man ska göra för att hänga med trenden
Som sajtägare måste man ta sig en riktig funderar kring hur man kan göra sin sajt mer social. I viss mån konkurrerar traditionella räckviddsannonser med det sociala, ju mer sådana annonser och ytor desto mindre engagemang. Det betyder att man måste försöka utveckla det sociala engagemanget och skära ner på de traditionella annonsargumenten/ytorna. Har man en nischad sajt med betydande trafik måste man agera nu, annars är det för sent. Det är bevisat att människor är väldigt otrogna till sina besökta sajter, det är lätt att byta till någon annan om man finner bättre vänskap eller engagemang där. Det är också lätt att stirra sig blind på sina ökande trafiksiffror och tro att allt är frid och fröjd, när man egentligen blir lurad av sin egen önskan att välja tjänster och samarbeten som ökar unika besökare. Problemet är just det, man måste förstå sina siffror i relation till affärsverksamheten och vad annonsörer vill ha framöver och den generella ökningen på marknaden.

Om t.ex. man har en stadig ökning av unika besökare kan det betyda tvärtom att sajten håller på att vattnas ur, eller att målgruppen suddas ut vilket lätt händer om man fokuserar på innehåll och ”content” som oftast handlar om fakta och är associerad med söktrafik från Google. Bra egenskaper som bekräftar ett ökat socialt engagemang är antalet sidvisningar per unik besökare, behåller man eller ökar den siffran hela tiden är man på god väg att förankra verksamheten i nästa decennium också. Men det gäller att gå ur båten och titta på samma siffror på konkurrerande sidor, ökar de mer i engagemang än sin egen sida så har man fortfarande ett problem. Det är lätt att ljuga om siffror såklart, det är lika lätt att öka sidvisningar som det är att öka unika besökare så det gäller att förstå vad som är viktigt på sajten och granska den delen i sitt sammanhang.

Sammanfattningsvis kan man säga att vill man vara konkurrenskraftig framöver måste man redan idag se till att i alla beslut prioritera och lyfta fram det sociala engagemanget, imorgon är det för sent.

Definition av framgång på nätet

Vad är framgång på nätet, är det pengar, antal besökare, renommé eller kanske bara idealistiska mål, ja det kan man fråga sig. I de flesta branscher handlar det i alla fall om pengar, vem tjänar mest på vad osv för de flesta tjänster blir eller kanske redan från början skapas som en handlingsvara.

De som tycker att snygg design på en hemsida är framgång bör ta en extra tid på världens populäraste radannonseringstjänst Craigslist, den har bara i USA 47 miljoner unika besökare per månad. Blocket må vara populärt i Sverige men i storlek är den i jämförelse en piss i missisippi. Det sägs att Craigslist drar in i runda släng 1 miljard kronor om året och skulle utan problem tjäna 100 gånger mer och har bara 20 anställda, men ingen vet exakt för de som driver sajten bryr sig inte om det eller verkar ha några planer på att sälja konceptet. Craig Newmark, grundaren gillar läget som det är, att designa om sajten är tydligen sist på dagordningen.

Att ha många unika besökare är också en framgångsfaktor för en del i branschen, i alla fall för att hävda sig med att kunna sälja annonser. Men dessa värden håller på att förändras, annonsmarknaden på internet är mer medveten och man har förstått att en riktad kampanj kan ge betydligt mer avkastning än en webbplats med stor spridning/målgrupp (unika besökare). Unika besökare eller UB i branschen har fram till 2009 varit det viktigaste värdet (= pengar), nu börjar istället besökstiden och antal klick per besök bli viktigare som vittnar till engagemang.

För mig är framgång på nätet där det finns en viral potential och där vinstmarginalen är ovanligt hög och där alla de anställda känner sig delaktiga och tycker det är fantastiskt roligt med arbetet. Det är sådant jag strävar efter i mina entreprenörsengagemang.

Det pratas hela tiden om social media, jag själv refererar till det i varannan mening i princip men att definera det är kanske inte självklart.
